In 1930 Kōyō published a set of more than twenty rinpa-style flower and bird pictures. The Japanese word rinpa means school (pa) of Kōrin (rin) Ogata, who was an innovative seventeenth century Japanese artist. Rinpa-style objects are caricatures of real objects drawn using exaggerated curves and a mixture of true and false colors. As a result, their true identity is not always clear. The species names given in the captions of the twenty-six woodblock-printed pictures in this gallery are best guesses. Click on a picture to enlarge it.
